Why character consistency is the benchmark that matters for stories

Most "Seedance 2 vs Kling 3.0" write-ups grade the wrong thing. They line up resolution, clip length, and price per second, declare a winner on raw specs, and never render a character twice. Seedance 2: strengths and limits from production use

Seedance 2 is ByteDance's flagship, and it is the model we reach for on hero scenes — the emotional close-up, the reveal, the shot that has to look like a real production. Its two production strengths, as of July 2026: cinematic image quality that holds up when a viewer stops scrolling, and native audio generated with the clip so a dramatic beat lands with sound instead of silence. For dialogue-adjacent and mood-driven shots, that combination does a lot of work.

On duration, Seedance 2 produces clips up to roughly 15 seconds. That is plenty for a single vertical-drama beat, which is the unit most vertical-drama creators are building — one emotional turn per shot, not a two-minute continuous take.

The honest limits: Seedance 2 is a cinematic finishing model, not a drafting tool, so it is not the model you want to burn on a dozen throwaway takes. And like every text-to-video system, it will happily generate a slightly different face each run if you do not anchor it to a locked reference. The quality is real; the consistency is something you have to supply.

Kling 3.0: strengths and limits (motion quality is real)

Kling 3.0 — the current Kling generation we run, spanning the V3 Pro and O3 variants — has a genuine, not-grudging strength: motion. Body mechanics, walk cycles, gesture, camera moves, physical action that has to read as weight and momentum. When a scene lives or dies on a character actually moving through space rather than emoting in a tight frame, Kling frequently gives us the more believable take.

Kling has real duration range too: as of July 2026, both the V3 Pro and O3 lines run from roughly 3 up to about 15 seconds (defaulting to 5), so you can give a movement room to complete when it needs it. Kling also offers dedicated motion-control variants that let you drive animation from a motion reference — a specialty lane Seedance does not target in quite the same way.

The limits are the mirror image of its strength. Faster, more physical motion is exactly the condition under which any model is most tempted to redraw a face mid-shot, so Kling scenes reward a strong reference lock even more than static ones do. Quality on the premium tiers is excellent, but on a stories pipeline you are still responsible for feeding it a consistent subject.

Consistency behavior with reference characters, model by model

Here is the part the spec-sheet comparisons miss: at Character App, character identity does not live inside Seedance or Kling at all. It lives in your Cast. A Cast is a saved character — a locked visual reference for the face, wardrobe, and style — that gets fed into every render regardless of which model is doing the rendering. Lock it once (from a single photo or from a text prompt) and the same reference conditions the Seedance shot and the Kling shot identically.

That design is why "which model is more consistent?" is slightly the wrong question in our workflow. Consistency is a property of the pipeline, not the engine. When we switch a scene from a fast draft model to Seedance 2 or Kling for the final, the character reference does not change, so the identity carries across the model swap. The second layer is continuity between shots. In a Story — a multi-scene narrative you direct scene by scene — each shot can chain from the prior frame, so pose, lighting, and framing flow forward instead of resetting cold. That scene-to-scene chaining works the same whether the underlying render is Seedance or Kling. Net effect from production: with a locked Cast plus frame chaining, both models hold a recognizable character well; without them, both drift. Both models are paid actions billed in Credits, and Character App shows the exact Credits price of any generation before you confirm it — so you are never guessing what a render will cost. The rough ordering, as of July 2026: the fast draft models we use for iteration are the cheapest by a wide margin, and among the cinematic finishing models Seedance 2 generally lands at the lower-cost end, with the Kling premium tiers priced at or above it.
