Content Policy

What you can and can’t create on Character App.

Character App is built for creative expression by adults. This policy sets the boundaries so the product stays safe, legal, and useful. Read the zero-tolerance section first.

Last updated May 3, 2026

Creativity, not harm

We welcome original characters, stylized fiction, fan art, and storytelling. We draw a hard line at content that harms real people or children.

Zero tolerance

CSAM (including AI-generated), non-consensual intimate imagery, and content that sexualizes minors are absolutely prohibited and reported to NCMEC where required.

Report in one tap

Every generated image, video, and character in the app has a Report button. We respond to reports within 48 hours.

1. What We Welcome

Character App is a product of charactr, inc. ("charactr"). This Content Policy is built for creative expression. We encourage:

  • original character design across any art style (anime, realistic, 3D, cartoon, Ghibli-esque, comic, etc.);
  • storytelling, world-building, and multi-scene narrative;
  • fan-style tribute work clearly presented as derivative;
  • stylized violence and mature themes in a fictional, non-graphic context;
  • experimentation with prompts, models, and references you have the rights to use.

2. Absolutely Prohibited (Zero-Tolerance)

The following categories are prohibited without exception. Violations result in immediate permanent account termination. Where the law requires, we report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) or the equivalent authority in your jurisdiction:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Any sexual, sexualized, or suggestive content depicting minors — real or AI-generated, photorealistic or stylized, whether you "think" the character looks older or not. This includes nudity, partial nudity, sexualized posing, and sexual innuendo involving minors.
  • Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). Sexual or intimate depictions of real people without their consent, including "deepfake" nudes or sexual acts.
  • Sexual content involving minors of any kind, including "aged-up" depictions of characters from children's media.
  • Content facilitating human trafficking, child exploitation, or sexual violence.
  • Terrorist or violent extremist content that promotes, glorifies, or recruits for organizations designated by the US, UK, EU, or UN.
  • Content that incites violence or hatred against a group based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or other protected characteristic.
  • Malware, phishing, or fraud material.
  • Content that facilitates illegal goods or services (drug sales, weapons trafficking, etc.).

3. Prohibited (Case-by-Case Enforcement)

The following categories are prohibited on Character App. Enforcement is case-by-case and may involve warnings, content removal, temporary suspension, or permanent ban depending on severity and history:

  • Sexually explicit content. The iOS app is 17+ and Apple App Store policies prohibit explicit adult content. Do not generate pornographic, graphic sexual, or fully-nude content on iOS. On the web, explicit content involving consenting adult characters may be subject to additional controls.
  • Graphic or gratuitous violence — gore, torture, mutilation, realistic depictions of real-world atrocities.
  • Hate speech or harassment targeting individuals or groups.
  • Self-harm content that promotes, glorifies, or provides instructions for suicide or self-injury.
  • Misleading medical, legal, or financial advice presented as factual.
  • Misinformation and deceptive political content, including deepfakes of political figures presented as real.
  • Impersonation of real individuals, brands, or organizations to deceive.
  • Spam, scams, and inauthentic behavior — bulk-generation for distribution, fake-identity rings, coordinated promotion of products or services, or abuse of the credit/referral system.

4. Real People, Celebrities, and Public Figures

You may not generate content depicting identifiable real people — private individuals, celebrities, public figures, co-workers, classmates, ex-partners, or anyone else — without their explicit consent or another clear legal basis.

This restriction applies to:

  • direct prompts naming a real person;
  • "inspired by" or "lookalike" prompts clearly intended to imitate a real person;
  • reference uploads of real people (unless you are the subject or have written consent);
  • deepfakes, impersonations, fabricated endorsements, or misleading political depictions.

Prompts that name real people are recorded and reviewed, and the model providers we use run their own filters against them, so a request naming a public figure will often be refused at the provider. Do not treat that as the boundary: this rule applies whether or not an automated system stops a given prompt, and we act on violations we find. If a request of your own likeness is refused, email support@character.app with proof of identity and we will review.

Voice and biometric likeness. Generating, cloning, or simulating a real person's voice, face, or other biometric likeness without their explicit, written consent is prohibited. This includes audio impersonations and lip-synced dubs of named individuals. California (AB 2602), Tennessee (ELVIS Act), Texas, and other states create direct civil and criminal liability for unauthorized use — you bear that risk.

6. Disclosure of AI Generation

When you publish Character App outputs outside the app, we strongly encourage you to disclose that the content was AI-generated. In some contexts (news, political advertising, certain jurisdictions) this is legally required. You are responsible for meeting any applicable labeling and disclosure rules.

7. How Enforcement Works

We moderate content with a layered system:

  • Provider safety filters. Every Image and Clip is produced by a third-party model — Google Imagen and Vertex, Seedance, and others — and each runs its own safety filters. For generated media these filters are the enforcing layer: a request they refuse never produces an output.
  • Our prompt classifier. We run our own classifier on some surfaces, including Character creation, World messages, and voice input. Prompts matching our child-safety category are refused outright there. Other categories are recorded for review rather than blocked, because the provider filters above are what gate generated media. False positives happen; you can appeal.
  • Refusals are shown to you. When a provider or one of our own gates refuses a request, the app tells you what was refused and whether anything was charged, rather than failing silently.
  • User reports. Generated media can be reported from the media viewer, the Library, and the Story editor. Reports are triaged within 48 hours.
  • Proactive audits. We periodically audit high-risk accounts and prompts.

Consequences for violations escalate with severity:

  • warning + content removal;
  • temporary suspension (7–30 days);
  • permanent account ban;
  • report to law enforcement or NCMEC for prohibited categories under section 2.

When we remove content or restrict your account based on a moderation decision, we will provide you a written notice describing the specific category violated and the basis for the decision (DSA Art. 17 statement of reasons), unless prohibited by law (e.g., child-safety reporting obligations).

8. Reporting Abuse

If you see something that violates this policy:

  • In the app: tap the Report button on the generation, character, or user profile. Reports reach us immediately.
  • By email: support@character.app. Include the URL or in-app ID, a short description, and (if applicable) your relationship to the subject.
  • For CSAM: we accept reports via support@character.app and report confirmed cases to NCMEC under 18 U.S.C. § 2258A. You may also report directly to the NCMEC CyberTipline.

You can also block a user from your own feed and generations. Blocking is one-sided and private.

9. Appeals

If your content was removed or your account was suspended and you believe it was a mistake, email support@character.app from the account email with:

  • the affected content ID or account email;
  • a brief explanation of why you believe the action was wrong;
  • any context you want us to consider.

A human reviews every appeal within 48 hours. If we agree, we will reinstate the content or account. If we disagree, we will explain why.
